BEAVER NELSON'S EXCITING OPPORTUNITY
- OVERNIGHT SENSATION
Anytime you hear about an "overnight sensation" in pop culture, that person worked very hard for a very long time doing something, and then all of a sudden—bam!—they're an overnight sensation. This is a play on that, but it's about a relationship, and the way that, over time, you come to see new evidence of love in ways you've never seen before. There are some facets of love, like the sacrifices the other person takes, that you don't see on a first date or even when you're falling in love—you only see it after years of hard work. But when you do see it, it's miraculous.

- LORD OF ALL THAT I SURVEY
That is a song about moving … and instinct. It's about the relationship between instinct and perspective and action.
- EXCITING OPPORTUNITY
There are times when you just have to slog it out, but the fuel for those times for me has to be at least the possibility of something new around the corner. Imagination helps, but nothing beats adrenaline. I'm an anticipation junkie.

- IF YOU NAME A THING IT DIES
That song is in halves. I state two completely opposite statements, and I believe them both to be true.
- PERFECT STRING
That's about wishes. It's about having a picture in your head of some sort of utopia, even if it's only an emotional utopia, something that you hold onto. But at the same time, it's not out of touch with the reality of how things are. We all go, 'Things will get better.' Well, what's your picture of better? This is that. I don't know if that will make sense to other people in that context, but it does to me.
- HUMILITY
This is just a whole bunch of pictures being painted—a rambling treatise on the concept of humility. I refuse to define that one any more than that!
- BAD MAN
My wife thinks this record is about coming to terms with manhood in a more mature way. But not, I hope, in a more boring way. "Bad Man" is just the coming to terms with certain physical realities, and psychological realities … I'm poking a bit of fun at myself when I was younger and had all those semi-delusional thoughts of self-importance. Everyone wants to be tough. But at some point it occurred to me that being a badass is really not that hard. What's really tough is doing the right thing that's sitting in front of you. And yet, there's always part of you that still wants all of that silly stuff, at least a little bit. You don't ever always get past everything.
- DO NOT APPEAR SURPRISED
People make assumptions about other people constantly, and some of those assumptions are just so clichéd that you lose track of who people are, because it's easier just to deal with the easily quantifiable stereotypes. The song's about not being known better by people who should know you better—but, I need to make it clear that any one of those verses that's me-me-me and pointed at somebody else, that could easily be turned around. That could be someone I know and love asking me, 'Why are you surprised that I am doing this for you? This is what I have proven myself to be.'
- NOTHING SEEMS REAL
There you go. There are times! It's not always like that, but there are times …
- MOVE ALONG (SHOW'S OVER)
We have to care and not care; we have to be attached and not attached. That song's somewhere in the tension between those two.
